  ZACHARIAH CANO

Writer PhotoHi! I am a post-graduate student reading for a doctorate in Astrophysics. Thats my day job. In my free time I work as a professional freelance writer, as well as riding motorcycles and practicing Buddhism, where I strive to see the universe for what it really is, and I must confess that the intrinsic beauty the universe contains never ceases to impress and inspire me. Throughout history man has sought to understand the universe through methodical investigations, and the small monads of clarity and understanding we have slowly developed truely astounds me.

Through my writing I try to convey my sense of wonder of the universe and the discoveries of science to my readers, using creative analogies and infectious enthusiasm.

I was first published in 2004, and since have written for popular science & astronomy magazines, poetry anthologies and peer-reviewed academic papers. I am currently publishing popular science articles in the Mercury Magazine, with several articles to be published in 2010, including Winter 2010 (Reflections Article about my experience of being a post-grad student studying Gamma Ray Bursts), Spring 2010 (Article about Gamma Ray Bursts) and Autumn 2010 (TBC, but likely to be about the Anthropic Principle and complexity within the universe).

I am interested in many topics including, but not limited to, astronomy & cosmology, Buddhism, philosophy and evolution.

Included here are some samples of my work: poems, popular science articles and academic papers.

MY NEWS:

July 2007: I graduated from the University of Sussex (UK) with a Masters Degree in Physics.
My masters thesis has been accepted for publication in "The Observatory", coming out Feb. 2010. A pre-print copy is available on astro-ph: (http://arxiv.org/pdf/0909.3368v1).

Oct 2008: I started a three-year journey to complete a PhD in Astrophysics at the Astrophysics Research Institute (ARI) at John Moores University in Liverpool. I am observationally investigating Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), in particular the GRB-Supernova connection.

Mid 2009: As a member of the ARI GRB group, I have led several GCNs (Gamma Ray Burst Circular Network) in response to alerts coming from several satellites such as Swift, and they are available for viewing on the NASA-ADS link below.

2010: My masters thesis is being published in Feb, and I have two articles accepted for publication in the Mercury Magazine, both in the Winter and Spring 2010 editions.
