I started in the publishing business 30 years ago, fresh out of college, proofreading speeches and other presentations for GM executives. I then went into advertising copywriting, and remained in that field for some time. Finally, I accepted a job as a writer-editor at Sunburst Communications, an educational software company. When it downsized, I was fortunate enough to be hired immediately as a writer-editor for Novel Units, a publisher of literature guides, thematic units, and other K-12 educational materials. When Novel Units sold, I decided to try freelancing. No, I didn't give up my (two) day jobs as a dog walker and a copywriter. Within six months, however, I had a contract for a book for Barron's Educational Series and some copyediting work for Amsco School Publications. I acquired other clients, too: Pearson Prentice-Hall, Harcourt, Time for Kids, Topics Education, the National Storytelling Association, and some private-party clients. I've been working as a full-time freelancer for 8 years now--although I worked from home on a contract basis for many years before "going out on the limb." I love writing and anything that has to do with language and words. I enjoy learning about new topics as I research articles and check facts. I do kinda miss walking those dogs, though! They were great!

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- As advertising copywriter for a radio station in the Detroit market, I helped sales execs to obtain contracts for air time and also wrote print ads to promote the station, devised marketing ideas for remote broadcasts, and so forth. When I wore my public relations director hat, I worked closely with community organizations to help promote events.
- As a writer-editor for an educational software company based in New York, I researched how children learn to spell and worked directly with programmers to develop software programs for 4th and 5th grade spelling curriculums. I also wrote the software guides and teacher's manuals that accompanied these. I wrote several teacher's manuals for other programs, including one early readers program we did in partnership with Disney. It won a Parents' Choice Award.
- As a writer-editor for Novel Units, I edited over 100 literature units, each of which included a 42-page teacher's manual and about 40 pages of student handouts, quizzes and tests.I also wrote 40 units myself. I continued this type of writing later as a freelancer working for Learning Links, Center for Learning, Course Crafters, and Sundance.
- In 1998, I decided to try freelancing. During that time, I have delivered 12 full-length books to publishers and edited dozens of other pieces of writing.
