  LISA HILBERS

Writer PhotoI am an avid writer of poetry. I lean more on the subject of patriotism, the soldier's story, and the neverending battles they endure. Both on the battlefield and personally.
I have many poems published on different websites, and some have been published in newsletters that reach far and wide.
I'm a Mother of five adult children, and a housewife.
I'd have to say the major influence in my life was my Mother. If I done wrong she could surely influence me into a different way of thinking real fast, but that is not exactly why I feel that she was my inspiration.
She was not what one would want to call 'religious' but she read the KJV of the Bible, from front to back many, many times. I'm not sure why she felt the need to do that, if it was something she felt, in her heart she needed to do, or if it was because she found it the most interesting read that she had at her disposal at the time. You see? She read something, all the time. Whether it was the newest novel by her favorite western author, or maybe just something that she happened across that grabbed her attention. She was going to read, even if it was the inserts from junk mail.
When her three children were young, she took us to Sunday school and church services every weekend, but when she felt that we were old enough to make our own decisions on our religious preferences, she quit taking us. She turned us loose to make those decisions for ourselves. I once asked her why she felt motivated to do that, and the expression on her face before she ever spoke any words, for me was priceless, but after a moment, she said, I believe in the depth of freedom. Never let anybody, ever, make choices for you where your rights to your choice of religion is in need of answer. The only one you owe an answer to on that subject, is to yourself, and God above, 'if' you choose to believe in that manner. You wouldn't have had to know her, to see the dedication on her face, as she made those statements.
She was not an alcoholic by any means, but she drank 'a beer' a day, for as many years as my memory allows me to remember back. And anytime one asked her why, she would tell you, because I like the taste. It was almost like a ritual when she came home from work, that she probably drank that beer many times that I never even noticed she was doing so. Just like her reading, it was a part of who she was.
She never done anything, that she didn't give it all she had. One of her favorite sayings, was "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right." and, "If you want it done right, do it yourself." And so most of the time, she did just that.
My Mother passed away in June of 2001, and as we all know, it was shortly before the horrid attacks on America. I remember thinking as I sat and watched that tragic ordeal unfold that day, how I was so very glad that my Mother was not here to see what was happening.
My Brother and Sister both called me that afternoon, and that very thought was the first thing that they stated. As much as we miss her in our daily lives, after that day, we were totally convinced, that God knew what kind of impact those scenes would have had on her, so He took her home, so she would be shielded from it all.
She wrote poetry, but most never knew it, until after her death. I never wrote a poem in my life, until September 12th, 2001. Which makes me wonder, if she's still writing.
