Stephen Leake was born in Blackpool, Lancashire, and went on to study music at the City of Leeds College of Music. He completed his musical studies in Birmingham before moving to London to become a teacher.
He has written since childhood, but has only recently decided to dedicate more time to his interest. Most of the earlier work is autobiographical, dealing with scenes from childhood and adolescence. He has drawn on the English Lake-District and the Blackpool area for his main inspiration. The sea, water and natural images are key themes which weave their way in and out of the poems.
In his current work, his voice is more distinct. He has been described as being temperamentally and stylistically different from his contemporaries. Leake explores simple observations of people, emotions and everyday events. He enjoys writing for a general audience, believing that communication is the key to all poetry, on whatever level.
