An old man getting older: I began in a traditional manner but quickly deviated from that path when I failed my first semester as a journalism major at the University of Missouri. Because of the Vietnam war, I enlisted in the Navy and, after being disharged in 1971, spent the next 15 years drifting around mainly working as a marine electrician on oil tankers, fishing boats, aircraft carriers, tugboats, and submarines but also working as a sales rep, bartender, cabbie, whatever. During all that time, I wrote journal entries and impressions (things I still have stashed in file cabinets and must get back to some day). I finally returned to college in 1987 and earned an MFA from Goddard College in 1996. Since then, I've been living a modest and relatively "normal" life in the Los Angeles area--raising Gabriel, teaching in community colleges, and still writing.

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- While writing book reviews during my stint as an undergraduate, one of my "blurbs" ended up on a second edition of my professor's book.
- Managed to have one of my undergrad papers published in an anthology of critical studies of poet William Everson.
- Have managed to collect interviews with poets, jazz musicians, and others in the arts and entertainment field.
- Shared a scotch on the rocks with Joseph Heller before he died.
