I was born in the former East London area of Imonti in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. I did my primary education in Mdantsane from 1984–1989. It was only when I went to high school though in the early 90’s that I began to realize and recognise growing interest in me for literature, particularly the reading and analyzing of novels, poetry, prose, bible, magazines – anything I could lay my hands on to read. I began to write essays and poetry (mostly as part of my schoolwork) both in Xhosa and English.
After leaving school, I went to Rhodes University to do a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. While studying at Rhodes University, I joined the campus radio station called RMR as a news reader in Xhosa. This presented me with an opportunity to learn, explore and expand more on my creative writing abilities. I learnt everything from news translation and on-air reading techniques; news-gathering, brainstorming and research; field reporting and recording techniques as well as sound engineering and production. I served in several capacities during my stay at the station, ranging from newsreader, field reporter, talkshow producer and researcher.
Upon graduation from Rhodes University, I joined a software development company called Software Futures, starting off in year 2000 as a Software Programmer / Developer. While at Software Futures, I was introduced into yet another form of creative writing – Business Writing & Presentation techniques. This entailed a wide range of writing styles and techniques in producing Business minutes, business plans, letters, memos, reports and other technical documents such as Business Use Case Specifications (UCS) and User Requirements Specifications (URS).
Other developed creative writing abilities include designing of websites, greeting & business cards, business plans and corporate reports.
