 I was born in Gainesville, Georgia in 1950, but grew up in East Texas, mostly in Huntsville. My home town is famous for being the center of the Texas Department of Corrections and the location of state-mandated executions. Both my parents worked in the prison system, and we lived across the road from what was then the only women's prison farm in the state.
After graduating from public schools, I attended Michigan State University, graduating with a degree in religion in 1972. That same year I entered a Roman Catholic religious Order, the Discalced Carmelite Friars. I made my first profession in 1974 and was ordained a priest in 1979. I lived in monasteries in Little Rock, San Antonio, Dallas, Mexico City, Washington, DC, Boston, Wisconsin and Chicago. I got my MA in Theology from the University of Dallas (1976) and did further studies in theology at the Catholic University of America. In 2004, after 32 years in the Order and twenty-five as a priest, I decided to move on. Today I live in central Wisconsin and work as a spiritual counselor for the local hospice program and as office manager for a small law firm.
I began writing in high school, and had one poem published in a college poetry collection. In the Carmelites, I wrote articles on Carmelite figures and spirituality which appeared in several Catholic magazines. I also translated works from Spanish, including a small sxteenth century treatise by a close associate of St. Teresa. I am a contributor to a dictionary of Catholic spirituality, and many of my conferences are avilable on tape or CD.
I have completed a mystery novel based on an incident in the life of St. John of the Cross and am trying to find a publisher for that. I also have a humorous short story I am hoping to place. My writing has been mainly academic or inspirational, and I would like to develop more in fiction.
