Fear
Fear. I finally wrote it down. I know now what affect this feeling has on the minds of people. How it leads them to greatness or despair. How it has the power to cripple a man when things are not going in the right direction.
Fear comes in various forms. Psychologists and behaviorists of all times have unsuccessfully attempted to unravel the mysteries of the greatest of fears, the fear of death. Doctors have various names for fears due to different things, fear of water, fire, flying, heights, all come with a suffix –phobia and others which are worse, and can lead to greater danger to a man’s mind and well-being, come under terms like psychosis etc.
Fear can lead us to do things that we would normally look down upon. Fear of losing power can force a leader to include “tainted” subordinates in his team and fear of individual failures can make even the most intelligent of people, such as those from our most reputed institutions, to go and work in foreign lands or in foreign companies. Due to this fear, two countries fighting each other can be lured into buying guns from a single seller.
Fear affects different men in different ways. In a single family you can find a brother who dares to die for his country and another who runs away to ‘a land of opportunities’ due to his fear of failure. One legendary actor I know openly admitted to his fear of facing the camera but went on to performing better and better every time, one great cricketer, whose fear makes him extremely superstitious about how he dresses, before he goes on to demolish many a formidable opponent. The world knows about a frail but great leader overcame his fear and decided to stand up against the greatest power in the world to free his people from the shackles of slavery.
Fear begins to take root when one is a child. It makes one choose the easy way in life. A child needs courage to take his first steps. He overcomes his fears if he is not given continuous support and allowed to fall many times before he masters the art of standing up. Once he does stand up on his own, he learns the joy of standing up against all types of adversities.
Opportunities that lead to greatness come to everyone by chance. It is difficult to put a finger on it but there is one spark in everyone’s life, which can drive one to greatness. This spark is sometimes disguised as a failure, sometimes as a dream come true. One has to face his fears to make the most of this opportunity. We all know a few reluctant individuals who got an opportunity to lead their people. Although initially they were afraid to handle the situation, they were able to do a good job by overcoming their fears.
I feel that that the people who are successful are so afraid that they decide to confront their fears head-on, and do something about it. They realize that they cannot survive if they succumb to their fears. The ones who are really successful are those who have risen above their fears and channeled it into a powerful force, the way we direct the force of a river to get hydroelectric power. Fear can be overcome. We need to dam it.
Most of the poets have preferred to stay away from this misunderstood feeling as it is seen to be having a direct correlation with another dreaded word, cowardice. However, describing one person as a fearless person and another as a coward would be over-simplifying the process of understanding human behaviour. as we have all been plagued by fear since birth.
Many people are making a killing out of exploitation of this feeling, such as the makers of hit horror movies, selling guns and bombs and other sophisticated fighting machines simultaneously to two countries, and some are also making money by treating fear, by using mass hypnosis, to cure psychosomatic disorders.
Fear enables one country to take away riches, such as oil, from another country.
