MY NEWS:
Excerpts from my published works:
1. From an article:
I sit on my time machine and travel forward to the Year 2020 and park my vehicle in front of Apartment # 200 on Oracle Avenue in Techno city. Two people are conversing as follows:
Mr X: hi, what language do you speak at home?
Mr Y: visual C++
X: i c, mine is HTML ++..
Y: ok, c u at 2 2 day
. .
With the intensity and speed with which our youngsters seem to get attached to the software packages and the email jargon, we may probably hear such conversations even before 2020 [Thanks Alvin Toffler, A C Clarke et al who warned us on similar impending issues long back in their `Future Shock', `2001: A Space Odyssey' etc]..
2. From an article:
Year 1980. It is dawn in a remote village in eastern Bhutan. The aromatic cup of Assamese tea and the spectacular Himalayan splendor make me ecstatic! But inside me, there is something in contrast: Worry. Yes, I am greatly worried about my previous day's mathematics class in Std 2 ..
3. From an article:
Year 1981. Our scene is set in an urban elementary school that uses English across the curriculum. The teacher is teaching `Feeding habits of birds' to her children in class 5. She is a die-hard worker and uses a range of strategies and teaching aids incorporating video clippings, CD ROM etc. At the end of the 40 minute period, she gives homework from the pages of the textbook..
4. From an article:
..Next morning I enter my class, with a very enthusiastic `boyish' briskness and promise to help them out "within the period." I play a video clip that shows a man being rushed to the ICU of a hospital immediately after a severe road accident. I ask my students to describe the scene in simple, communicative English. Students talk a lot and come up with a variety of descriptions. I continue my interaction by asking,..
5. From an article:
Year 1983. Ethiopian highlands. A rural senior secondary school .. situated on the national highway connecting Debre Berhan and Addis Ababa. The landscape was picturesque, reminding me of the 1960's pop song "Green Green Grass Of Home" by the legendary Engleburt Humperdinck. The people were friendly and hospitable. The school had a well-stocked library, physical education room and a staff room. It also had a science laboratory good enough to teach most lesson concepts using whole class demo. I had to teach "latent heat of fusion" .. Thus my students' curiosity didn't kill the "cat" but instead ignited their creative potential.
6. Caterpillar's dream: A short poem for pre primary school kids:
Caterpillar green
On a flower that's clean
Caterpillar green
Gets to a nice dream
Caterpillar bright
Turns to butterfly that's light
Says with a nod
"Thank You, my God"
7. Bunty's back pain: A short story for children
It's Sunday evening. Bunty spent the whole day out with his friends and forgot all about Monday's English test at school. He returns home after play and takes a fresh bath. It's 8 O' clock. His mother says, "Bunty, dinner is ready. Don't waste your time. You have to prepare for tomorrow's English test." This worries him.
Well, what does Bunty like to do at school? Sometimes, he finds it is so interesting to watch what's happening outside the window that he completely misses the teacher's lessons and all those important points that she writes on the board.
It's 8.15. Bunty sits at the dining table. His plate contains vegetable soup, aloo parathas and thick curds. He usually relishes them. But now, they look like monsters saying, "Hey, tomorrow morning Ms Bhavani will be in your class with her question paper. How are you going to handle it?." This terrifies him. He has to act swiftly before it is too late. He looks himself in the mirror at the wash basin. He looks very tired. Eureka. He has got the idea!
As he eats his dinner, he groans frequently. His parents get anxious and ask as to what is wrong with him. He groaningly replies, "Oh, my hands and back are paining so much that I cannot even lift the water bottle.." His dad says, "Bunty, that's what happens when you play for the whole day. It doesn't matter. You can stay away from school tomorrow and take rest."
This is exactly what Bunty expected, after all! He is happy that the ordeal has ended.
He spends the next day without watching much TV. He is both sorry and happy. In the evening he phones Nanoo, his classmate, to find out about the test. Nanoo says, "There was an unexpected change in the class time table this morning. There was a magic show. Hence Ms Bhavani said that today's test is postponed for tomorrow and will contain more questions to answer."
Bunty almost faints.
