BookExcerpt: “There were a few more hours of dancers and animal acts with a break in between for a chariot race. It was late afternoon when the arena cleared and Lucius appeared on horseback, galloping to the middle of the stadium, rearing his horse for effect. Valarian was becoming exhausted and had a sense of dread at having to watch gladiators. He’d successfully avoided gladiatorial games for the last eight years, having preferred more benign contests and displays. He wondered how Saphia was feeling and was considering leaving the games to return home, but as he started to rise, Lucius announced the upcoming match. Sighing, he sat back down.

“We have a treat for you this afternoon. The gladiator games!” Lucius pulled his horse back up onto its rear feet. “We will open with something special, a competition between two women, one a criminal, the other a free woman from a far away province!”

Valarian leaned forward, not quite believing his ears. Two women were going to be engaged in a battle of strength for their very lives. The thought intrigued him so much that he found himself on the edge of his seat in anticipation. Lucius rode from the arena as a hand-pulled platform rose from the underground cells to the stadium floor carrying two women bedecked in armor, holding small round fighting shields. One was wearing a gray helmet with a short horsehair plume running front-to-back and the other was covered in a polished black helmet with a complete visor obscuring her face. The women were standing apart with a soldier in between. As the platform rose, the audience could see an assortment of weapons, including nets and maces, around their feet.

Valarian’s heart was beating faster. Lucius, still on his horse, was waiting at the entrance gates inside the arena. The soldier said something to the women, then stepped off the platform and jogged toward Lucius. The amphitheatre was cloaked in an unusual silence as the setting sun cast an orange glow across the dirt floor.”

Synopsis: This is a story about the interwoven lives of Valarian, Emperor Galba’s son, his friend, General Lucius Silva, and their misadventures to discover the instigator of a rebellion. The novel takes place during the historical period of 68-69 AD when civil strife hit the Roman Empire and a series of four men all contested for the position of Emperor. This story takes Valarian and Lucius into the depths of treachery and intrigue while they attempt to quell a rebellion that starts with the murder of Galba and puts Valarian on the throne.

As Emperor, Valarian has trouble coming to grips with his position, especially when, disguised, his beloved wife, Saphia, and an Egyptian captive woman, Sumana, battle as gladiators in the amphitheatre where he accidentally wounds Saphia. Lucius is so intrigued with Sumana that he soon begins to fall in love with her. Shortly thereafter, Otho, a ruthless man with aspirations of declaring himself king over Egypt and Rome, captures Lucius and Saphia, forcing Valarian to surrender and sacrifice his life for that of his loved ones. After the death of Valarian, Lucius realizes he has lost control over the Imperial Army and is dying from a serious wound. His soul is tortured at the loss of his friend and his inability to exact revenge, but an Egyptian mystic, Hin-Det-Ra, imbued with mysterious powers from the god Ra promises eternal salvation for Lucius, Sumana and Saphia.
