MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- How did your living room look after the Christmas morning chaos of gift unwrapping? Did you have an extra bag curb side or was it two? Were you overwhelmed by the package packaging? Boxing Day I watched my Grandson open his last remaining gifts. It was a very interesting procedure, and he’s only good for about 3 unwrap and he’s done. His aunt wrapped his present loosely so he had no problem with that part, but she had recycled a cereal box, and it obviously wasn’t his favorite brand, and he proceeded no further with out coaxing. I only hope he doesn’t figure Bob The Builder comes in all the cereal boxes now. I have seen this before with different results with my own niece and nephew. I had gotten them mittens and matching toe socks and wrapped them in KD boxes. They weren’t exactly thrilled when the realized it wasn’t really KD in the boxes. The next present my Grandson opened was a nightmare. It was taped and stapled together, then there was an inner box to which the truck was attached by 5, that’s five twist ties. As I was watching my daughter struggle to untangle the twisted mess, I thought, What would the cashier at Wal-Mart do if I had opened it there at the till and said, “Oh please, could you put this in your garbage?” Or “I just want the truck, is there a discount if I don’t take the packaging?” Those thoughts vanished quickly and were replaced with visions of a lynching dancing in my head. You just don’t want to make waves in Christmas line ups. Too dangerous! But on the other hand if everyone was to do it…, Department store garbage fees would increase. They would then look at more conservatively packaged product right? Do we as consumers really realize the power we have? Or do we just continue to shop with our blinders on?
There is a little store called “Changes”, right beside the Save On Food’s Store in Cranbrook. Did you know that at this store they give you 5 cents for each 4 liter milk jug you return, or you can take the points instead on your Save On Card? My sister takes mine back with her when she visits. She gets the points and I get awesome birthday and Christmas gifts. The Grocery truck brings in groceries and takes back returns. Wouldn’t you like to have something like that here? No, not a Save-on Foods, we already that, it’s just spelt different, I’m talking about an in store recycling service. One stop Shop and recycle.
And hey I know there are people out there who claim recycling isn’t profitable, they are usually the people in waste management. And I can understand that. If we as a society ever achieved ZERO WASTE, those are the people who would be out of jobs! Guess they don’t want to look at the 6th R of recycling, job retraining. - How many times have you heard it asked of some arrogant man…’Who does he think he is, God’s gift to women?’ I, myself have taken quite a few swipes at the males around me. And what damage have I done while just trying to get a laugh? Some of the jokes I hear are tasteless, others are rude, and some are outright put downs to males. Guy bashing, it’s a favorite past time for many. Some women have been truly hurt by men; they are resentful, angry and bitter towards that particular man and slide all other men into the same category. No matter what our belief’s, our values our likes and dislikes, we all teach by example. What example is being taught to kids by the adults in their lives?
Have you seen the advertisements for the “Bringing Up Boys” Video series? Does it look like something you’d be interested in, as a grandparent, daycare provider, teacher, scout leader, parent, or soccer coach? I can see this series as being helpful to every woman who has ever had any kind of a relationship with a male and vice versa. Personally, I can see this series being helpful to every human being who has ever been, or going to be involved with a child.
Now you want to know why, right? Well it’s like this. Everyone will admit that our society is messy. Gone are the days of “Me Tarzan, you Jane” Gone are the dreams of young girls waiting for a valiant knight in shinning armor, carrying a sword and poetic pen. To –day’s world is perverse and self-serving. Our economy is dictating that mother and father may both have to work in order to make ends meet. Is our society also saying that both parents should be responsible for cooking, cleaning, changing diapers and child rearing? Feminism, tolerance, and mediocrity, are some of the buzz words of our times, but what price do we pay for these ideals? Are women less feminine because they work outside the home? Are men less masculine because they work inside the home? Are politically correctness, and the uni-sexing of so many things, blurring the identity lines between man and women?
Does a title like ‘Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars’ conger up visions of alien (thinking) men? How about that new Toyota commercial, where a good looking young man, with a sexy little accent, is expounding on the reasons he bought a van, to a women who obviously bought a sports car. He was thinking into the future… when he met the right woman and had a few children. She asked him what planet he was from and were there sexy bad boys in sports cars? Rather young virile men in vans, wanting and thinking about marriage, fatherhood and the future
Dr. James Dobson’s video series “Bringing Up Boys” would be good for everyone to see. These children are our future, everyone’s future. They will be the politicians, doctors and policy makers, when we are senior citizens. Their attitudes and values will have a direct impact on us. What would you like to see them learn from us?
