Welcome to Art of Storytelling, a coaching service for writers. I provide ongoing support to writers, weekly one-on-one sessions where we speak to the soul of the work and tackle the practical aspects of good writing.
I am a fiction writer, visual artist, former international journalist, teacher and healer, with a strong commitment to exploring voice around the world. I use all of these passions in coaching writers.
As a published writer, both in fiction and journalism, I guide clients through the professional aspects of writing. We explore how to brainstorm story ideas for novels or short stories; we study characterization, plot, setting and theme; we learn the power of the revision process; and we study how to get your work to market.
As an artist, both through fiction and visual art (see my art website www.carolineallen.com), I deeply understand the dynamics involved in committing to your soul's path. Coaching includes exploring the peaks and valleys of what it means to be an artist.
As former international journalist, in Tokyo, London and Seattle, I am able to provide professional, to-the-point advice that will get your work published. I am fully versed on the technical aspects of writing - sentence structure, grammar, etc.
As a teacher, I am committed to explaining the elements of writing, from characterization to climax, in clear, understandable, intelligent terms. You will learn a great deal about writing in these coaching sessions. I believe in creating independence in writers, so clients can take off on their own as fully professional writers.
As a healer, I understand how healing the process of writing is. I spent years as a counselor, and bring the skills of good listening and empathy to the coaching sessions.
Finally, VOICE is of deepest importance to me. I believe many of us have been taught to standardize our modes of expression. Writers and artists must undo this learning, and seek their unique voice, their eccentric style. The greatest compliment I have received came from a writer's group made up of AofS clients. Each told me they were amazed at how different each person's style was. No two of my clients ever sound alike; we're always exploring personal self exploration. This passion for voice has grown with my increasing exposure to other countries, and other voices.

BIO
For 15 years, I travelled the world as an international journalist, working as an editor and reporter with newspapers and magazines in Tokyo and London and as a travel writer for a year in Asia. I wrote stories on becak drivers in Indonesia, on island paradises in the Philippines, on kids in juvenile detention in Seattle. I loved this world, but also knew at the age of 29 that I needed to follow my calling to write fiction. For the past 10 years, I've coached and taught several hundred people around the world in writing fiction and memoir.
Graduated cum laude from the top journalism school in the U.S., the University of Missouri, School of Journalism.
A decade of international writing experience, serving as a features editor for a major Tokyo newspaper, a travel writer in Asia, and an editor and journalist for London dailies like the Independent and the Financial Times.
Served in Seattle as an entertainment journalist for the Seattle PI, the Seattle Weekly, and national magazines.
A fiction writer for nearly a decade. Several short stories published in literary journals. Recently took a six-month sabbatical in London to study fiction writing with several women authors. Recently completed the first draft of a novel called Earth.
Writing teacher for 10 years, assisting hundreds of people from Shanghai to Spokane in unlocking their creativity and telling their stories. I have taught at the CityLit Institute in London, at the Art Institute of Seattle, at the nonprofit artists cooperative SAW, at community colleges in the Seattle area, and independent Art of Storytelling classes in the U.S. and Canada.
