  MARIE JUDD

Born in Miami, Florida, December 4, 1950, I grew up in Texas, but traveled to Tucson Arizona for 4 years during the early '60s. After achieving a Bachelor of Science at Texas A&M University in 1973, I met S.F.Judd in 1975 and began a lifelong learning career which has included travel in 30 states.

Intense medical/educational/writing activities developed as an outgrowth of the presence of the Parkinson’s health condition in our lives as of 1986. From 1998 to 2002 teaching certification was pursued at the University of Houston and I taught school full time for 4 ½ years before moving to Florida due to the need to devote full time to home healthcare pursuits.

In 2004 Judd and I developed the QuestforCure website along with obtaining a Master of Education in Instructional Technology.

The challenges and tough learning experiences associated with Parkinson's have been unable to take away our excitement for life, especially as we see a growing global network of people help each other to arrive at brighter days of wellness!

  • Managing an Online Learning Schedule
    By Callie Marie Judd
My first online learning schedule faced me as I decided to get my Master of Education degree after 30 years away from the academic setting. An added complication was the fact that my husband's health condition was requiring increasing amounts of attention each day and I was his only primary care person. I would like to share with you the things I found to be useful to me as I struggled to meet the demands of this 10-month accelerated learning experience.
My first change of habit had to be to DO IT NOW no putting off or letting things each day pile up. Whatever came to be done I worked on right then, seeing it was at least started and a finishing time was scheduled. This could be particularly challenging as my first priority had to be to care for my husband as his needs demanded (which leads to the next management item).
Soliciting my husband's cooperation on this project was essential. I would highly recommend anyone take time to sit down with others impacted by the learning commitment you make - find out what level of support, understanding, and commitment they can also offer to you. For us, this process had to be repeated several times during the course of the year due to adjustments in his needs but I always kept him involved in the decision making process.
Once these two elements were in place I began organizing my estimated times of doing assignments. With children or other adults present (especially with illness) this is especially hard to put into a firm routine, so flexibility must be a key word in your vocabulary. However, a daily amount of time to be spent must be found within each 24-hour period so things do not get so backed up as to be overwhelming down the line.
Often, I found it very useful to break my work times into small "chunks" of work. It is really amazing how much online work can be done in a few minutes here and there!
Seeing the whole process as an opportunity for the fun side of life, engaging in "live" interaction with other classmates, and forgiving yourself when things don't happen as planned, are all part of managing an "online" existence. Keeping sight of the professional goal or purpose will also ease the tough spots when the real time stressors start piling on like the pile of dirty dishes, dinner waiting, and an assignment deadline within a matter of hours! Sometimes, just sharing my accomplishments with my husband was uplifting and surprisingly refreshing as time pressures mounted.
I would have never succeeded at completing the task I had brought onto myself if I had not exerted the extra effort it took to build a relationship with each of the eight professors involved. I found the school to be particularly helpful in their willingness to keep the steep learning curve very manageable by letting me know of options I had open and was not aware of when "frustration" tried to set in.
Despite the four hurricanes that plagued us that year in Florida, my husband and I got through the effort with a great sense of satisfaction at being able to look forward to each day positively, adding to our skills of time management, and enjoying the personal improvement and sense of accomplishment online learning had provided!

  • Parkinson’s Dis-ease, a Personal Perspective
    By Callie Marie Judd
Tons of information have been disseminated about Parkinson's over the past 200 years since Dr. James Parkinson's had the condition (disease?) named after him for his studies on the "shaking palsy" of the time. The basic information has been in front of people intensely now, thanks to Muhammad Ali and Michael J. Fox. However, I would like to share information beyond where the news media usually goes and cover some of the myths that are building along the way - especially that there is no known cure.
The Parkinson's condition does manifest itself with tremor, rigidity, slowness and often walking and speech difficulties. Diminished handwriting and loss of smell is also now considered "red flags" for the possibilities of it developing, even before other symptoms are observed.
An area the public is less aware of is how much it affects the thinking and information processing mechanisms of our brain. Even emotions and cognition are often affected, possibly reflected in obsessive/compulsive type behaviors or psychotic type conditions, including hallucinations and delusions. The confusion and variability concerning what people are dealing with is growing immensely.
Simply and realistically, the basic reason for Parkinson's is the lack and/or imbalances that exist of the neurotransmitters within the brain, of which Dopamine is only one. The faulty brain chemistry is actually reflective of nutritional and environmental elements within our lives. Causes for Parkinson's have been identified (carbon monoxide, excitotoxins, etc). The only reason a "cure" is not considered to be in existence is because there is no known artificially contrived medication that can make the symptoms stop. Medications only mask the symptoms temporarily and "buy time" for other approaches to make a difference. The same goes for surgical answers such as Pallidotomy and Deep Brain Stimulation. However, they are even worse because of doing irreversible brain damage as they temporarily give symptomatic relief.
One thing is for certain. Until the mental and the physical aspects of Parkinson's are addressed together successfully, the condition will continue to plague us, serving the same warning function for us as the canaries in their cages did for the coal miners while underground years ago.
Patients and families alike must actually start viewing the problems from the center of cause rather than as a set of symptoms. By dealing with Parkinson’s at the symptom level alone, the growing millions of people afflicted with Parkinson's and related conditions have maintenance therapy alone provided to them. They deserve to have more accomplished!
My husband and I have been living with Parkinson's in our lives for the past 21+ years. He knows what it is to be trapped in a body and mind that cannot and will not respond even as he internally is trying to make it do so. So many other conditions are overlapping in their presentation of Parkinson's-like symptoms that when a cure for Parkinson's is found there will be a cascading effect, producing ways to overcome many other neurodegenerative conditions. The reality is, the "cure" needs to be focused on so it can be defined and provided NOW!
