  JIMMY BRANTLEY

I was born in 1946, a byproduct of the hasty relationships demanded by war.

My lineage follows a long line of Missouri dirt farmers. Turning the soil has been a family tradition since the arrival of Duncan Brantley who, in 1622, began farming in Virginia. As the years drifted into decades, the hot, dusty farm roads would lead us to mark such places as Brantley County, Georgia; Brantley Alabama and Brantley Bend Arkansas. The migration would eventually find rest in the rich lands along the Missouri/Oklahoma border. As for me, well, I have never been a farmer. In fact, my life is as far removed from that of Duncan Brantleys' as are the years that separate us.

I grew up in the South where my principal instructors were the neighborhood racist, a poor educational system and a fundamentalist church that made the Puritans look like the cast from ANIMAL HOUSE. Education and travel would later rid me of the moral infections that these people had seeded during my youth and I would grow to learn the value of truth and tolerance. I would never learn the value, if indeed there is any, of keeping ones opinion to oneself.

If experience and imagination are the food of poets, authors and other poor people, then I will never go hungry. I must have inherited the Brantley "wanderlust" for I spent many years, both in the military and as a civilian, traveling the world. I have been alternately submerged, challenged and enlightened by many cultures. I have been changed and then changed again as my knowledge and interactions expanded. I have learned by accepting each culture on its own ground while, at the same time, searching for the truth and reasoning behind the society.

My philosophy is: Hold fast to the truth but never be rigid, always be the student. Even while teaching; remain the student.

It is indeed unfortunate that the space allocated here demands such brevity. I have so much to tell.

So, I will conclude this rather limited bio about a life that has left me with more facts, suggestions, stories, anecdotes and informed opinions than I could ever put to paper. If you would like to know more about my writing, please read "What I Do Best," it is located in the upper left of this page. You can also get an idea of the various styles I use to approach a story.
