In September 1999 I arrived at Funchal airport with 5 suitcases, a card board box and two children. With no one to greet us, we jumped into a taxi and headed for our new home in the city and thats where our new life started, on a beautiful tropical island in the middle of the Atlantic.
5 years later on, my children, Natalie now eleven and Elliot thirteen, have settled into the local village school where they are both prolific in the language of Portuguese. I, on the other hand are not, it goes in one ear and out the other and so my children save me a lot of money when it comes to translating!
When I arrived on the island I intended on carrying on with my previous career that I had worked hard at and had spent so long to train in. As a qualified hairdresser and complimentary health practitioner, specialising in Aroma-kinesiology and massage, I met a like-minded lady and we set up the'Essentially Natural Health Centre' in Funchal. After my first and hardest year in Madeira, I left the business and tried my hand at selling Timeshare. Those eight months of my life were yet to become the hardest. Working with tourists was a joy, working with my fellow expatriots was not. And as life has funny twists of fate and at a time where my life was one that I could not believe myself, I was led into the world of publishing, something I had always dreamed about, but never thought I would ever get to be involved in.
Always one to throw caution to the wind and jump in to what seems like a good idea at the time, I left my well paid but unhappy timeshare job on a Friday and found myself sitting in the directors chair on the following Monday, with a company to run, an English newspaper.
From this unbelivable transition, I now run my own English newspaper, which I launched in December 2003. In October 2004 this bi-monthly jornal has now gone monthly and has aquired fans from all over the world along with the local foreign residents and local people as well.
So, lets see what the next year brings to our readers on our sunny island as there is never a dull momment and a saga to write about wherever you go!

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- My accomplishments are, apart from my academic qualifications which are too boring to mention.......starting a new life as a single mum on a tropical island, owning a Quinta and running an English language newspaper for tourists, expats and locals!
If you have ever seen the film 'Under the Tuscan Sun'that character is me or at least my family and freinds think so, but I haven't reached the happy ending yet!
