  TONJA LATHAM

Writer PhotoThe english author Quentin Crisp once stated "existence is a funny thing that happened to me on the way to the grave." Existence is a derivative of the root word exist. One definition of this root word is "to live an unsatisfactory life." This simply means living a humdrum life as opposed to an exciting or meaningful one." Realizing the simple truth discovered in these definitions made me ask myself a very important question. Why does it seem that many of us get so settled into the familiarity of our current lives that we passively and miserably accept the status quo? We forget to anxiously expect our next level of excitement. We forget to look forward to our next stage of "life." We even negate the fact that the preparation towards our next level must be actively laid before us. Hence we bypass the benefits of "life" and only reap the benefits of existing.

You may be asking, "what is the true definition of life?". One definition considers it to be "vitality." It indicates the action of being alive rather than the passiveness of being alive. One of the greatest mistakes we can make is to stroll along day to day, passively allowing life to pass right by us. Somehow, we mistake the passive act of breathing in and out for active and true living. It is as if we feel that our dreams and goals will somehow spring themselves into action.

Simply understanding these common terms and their corresponding definitions has prompted me to take a long awaited action. I have practiced physical therapy for 12 years and enjoyed all that it has included. In 2001, I enrolled in a doctorate program in Kinesiology (with an emphasis in motor behavior). I knew that I wanted to lay a foundation for my next stage of life. Five years into my program and nearing completion, I feel appropriately armed to actively pursue my next goal of publishing. The combination of several years of treatment experience and the writing and research training that I honed in graduate school give me great confidence that successful achievement of my next goal is indeed practical. I am so grateful to have discovered the truth about life before I reached the grave by passively traveling a humdrum pathway!
