  SHAUN HAMILTON

I'm a 29 year old Architect, currently going through one of my many to come mid-life crisis. With the big '3' '0' around the corner, I've suddenly decided that I want to pack in everything I've done professionally over the last 6 years and become a full time writer - something my wife of 15 months isn't overly happy with. In fact, supportive but concerned would be a good description of how she's feeling at the moment.

The trouble is, I've always had an interest in writing (thats not to say I'm any good at it though) but it's been something that I've failed to pursue - for some reason I thought the life as an Architect would be more glamorous. (How wrong can you get! There's nothing glamorous about being stuck on a site in the middle of nowhere on a cold, wet December morning, let me tell you!) So now that I'm at one of those major life junctions, I'm figuring it's now or never, hence why I've joined this website.

So, I detailed Biography... where to start...? At the beginning wouldn't be a bad idea:

I was born 12th October, 1974 (Libran - a star sign I share with such esteemed company as Simon Cowell and the Duchess of York!) in one of the Six Towns that combine to make up the city of Stoke-on-Trent. I'm the eldest in my family, my brother arriving two years after my debut.

My school years were long and uneventful - and I challenge anyone who claims they are "the best days of your life"! If you say that, you never attended my schools! Thankfully, my college years proved overtly different...

During the three years I spent at Sixth Form college, I met friends I still see regular over 10 years later (three of which were Ushers at my wedding), a woman I spent 8 years of my life with (a subject I'd rather not go too deeply into), an intense hatred for Mechanical maths and my passion for writing. College brought me to my crossroads - Architecture or Writing - and despite what my heart was saying, I listened to my head (and my parents!). I subsequently moved on to Northampton where I gained my HND in Architectural Technology, and then finally to Derby University where, despite the laughs, I met people I would never see again outside the University World - a thought that brings regrets.

And now, six years after closing the doors on University life, I've designed and worked on various projects - some prestigious, some not so - but after all the bitching and back stabbing, I'm looking for a way out. I've settled in my home life - I've a fantastic wife who puts up with more than she should have to, but no children - something that will no doubt change in the near future, but before that happens, I'm finally going to give my heart a chance.

In the last few months, I've started writing short stories again with the intention of progressing on to my novel within the next year. (Ideally it would be completed before my thirtieth, but I'm not exactly a believer of miracles.) Ive plenty of ideas, some old, some new, some good, some not-so good, but they're there.

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
  • Finally getting married.

This is a man who, since the year dot, has insisted he'll never marry. Getting engaged I hadn't got a problem with, but marriage was always a big, huge even, no no. Too scary; too committed.

And then I met my Dentist. And everything changed... less than 18 months later I was standing at the front of a church in a kilt with my brother next to me, family and friends behind me and my soon to be future wife walking down the aisle.

    So much for committment.
  • It's got to be getting a 2:i for my degree. Never did I expect to get such a high mark after all the messing around and debuchery I had partaken in.
  • Gaining notoriety throughout college for my story writing.

I'm an individual who feels, if written well, no issue is taboo - however, this was an opinion the lecturers and even some of the students wished I would keep to myself. Thankfully, others were more open-minded and with some of the students I became somewhat of a cult figure.
  • Being alive, despite a few close calls...
