  MERLENE FAWDRY

Writer PhotoI live in northern Tasmania, the southern island state of Australia, separated from the mainland by the waters of Bass Strait. It was here that I was born and lived until I was a young adult when I before moved to the mainland state of Victoria - I returned to Tasmania in 2002 to marry the man I last saw thirty nine years before.

I have a grown-up family of seven children, twenty four grandchildren and two greats - and no pets at this time.

In my professional life, before my retirement in 2002, I was a youth worker and worked primarily with homeless families for over twenty five years. This included direct service work and program and policy development. My writing during this period was primarily professional in nature - report and submission writing - however, since my retirement, I have concentrated on more creative genres.

I enjoy writing short stories and poetry, and have almost completed an anthology of poems and vignettes that is intended as a social comment and word illustration of growing up in the nineteen fifties in Tasmania.

I have only recently began to send work out to publishers and competitions and, with the acceptance of my poem, Duplicity, by Australian Reader, I am optimistic of further success.

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
  • Completed qualification in Professional writing and Editing in 2003 - University of Ballarat
  • Raising a family to independence - their independence and my own mine that is - which has allowed me the freedom to make decisions and have a life that is not interdependent.
  • My recent writing accomplishments include:

Boating on the Tamar published in Words Words Words Anthology 2001

The Reunion published in Words Words Words Anthology 2002

Duplicity - a poem about logging in Tasmania - accepted for publication by Australian Reader

VOICE FROM THE HEART

More on the news of Tasmania’s first people
talking about loss of culture
and traditional heritage
lit a spark deep inside
of anger and resentment
for a birthright lost
stolen by an indifferent government
in a immoral social experiment
where children were taken
and given for their own good
to the deserving and the childless
and to whoever put up their hand.

And a defiant tear breaks away
to roll down the now lined cheek
of the aging Irish catholic child
taken into protestant care
and raised in staid Methodism
left to wonder why her heart
lurched and wept
each time she heard the song
it’s a long way to Tipperary
and her soul cried in harmony
to the strains of Galway Bay
