  KELLY DEPP

Writer PhotoI've been asked by many people what my driving force has been to write a book and see it through to publication. The truth is that I've always loved to write. I've been writing since I was in seventh grade and though it wasn't the main focus in my life until recently, it has always been an outlet that I enjoy.

The death of a friend inspired me to start the book that became 'Finding Home'. I wrote the first few chapters then set it aside. A dear friend several months later saw some of my writing and informed me that I needed to be writing. I took her the first three chapters I had written and asked her to review it. I told her that if, after reading it, she still thought I should be writing, then I would finish it. I still don't know if it was fortunate or unfortunate, but Lois got back to me in a few days and told me that I needed to finish it. Once I dedicated a large sum of my time to the first book, I realized it needed to be published and shared with as many readers as I could share it with. My son, Bradley, and my boyfriend, Charles, are my main cheerleaders - there are truly too many to mention here but I appreciate them all. Without the love and support of them all, I could never have accomplished completing the book let alone getting through the publication process. This has been a path of self-exploration and self-realization for me - I have found out just how strong I am and I have realized through this process that I can truly make anything happen.

Several people have asked me if any of the characters are based on real people - people from my life. In Finding Home, people who know me might see some similarities between the main character, Aimee, and me: Aimee is a single mother, she lived in the Boston area and was into rock climbing. But that's about where the similarities end. I've never been physically abused. My son's father is alive and well and is a good father to my son. None of my relationships have ended due to a death (thank heavens). I have a great relationship with all of my family and, thankfully, my mom is alive and well. The characters - in all of my stories - are unique to my imagination. Each one has many facets from my imagination combined with an attribute (or several) from various people that I may have observed at some point in my life. But no, none of them are based on real people.

Since completing the first book, Finding Home, I have written down ideas for three more books. The next one, 'The American Princess', is almost through the editing process and I will be looking for a publisher within the next month.

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
  • I have provided editing and proofreading services for many authors as well as book reviews for several authors. I enjoy reading, writing and working towards 'an error free product' in literature.
  • I have provided re-working and re-writing of resumes for friends and family in the past. I have also been recommended to others by these friends and family members. The feedback that I receive is that without my revisions, they wouldn't have landed the job they really wanted.

Prologue

I realized that I had been in a fog on Easter Sunday of last year. It all seems so surreal now, but to understand me and the wake-up call that I received we have to back up to Good Friday of that same year.

I was out to dinner with my boyfriend and my son. We were out for the evening and headed to a play following dinner. We were having dinner at Morton's near the theatre district in San Francisco. This was a special occasion, and we were all enjoying ourselves. Then all of a sudden I grabbed my purse, looked at my phone and thought, "Corinne..."

I noticed it was about 5:46 pm on my cell phone as I looked around at my family and then around the restaurant. I felt compelled to excuse myself from the table and go call Corinne; however, I didn't know what I would say when she answered. The moment passed, I did nothing, and our evening went on as planned.

I found an excuse to call Corinne the next day. I left her a voicemail regarding business. I still felt silly telling her I was calling because I felt like she needed me.

Easter Sunday came and my boyfriend, Rob, took my son, Tyler, and I out for brunch. Rob and I got into a conversation about life insurance. I was concerned about something happening to him, especially since he owns his own business and that was Rob's and my sole source of income (I work for him). We continued the conversation as we drove to his office to unload some equipment after brunch.

Rob unloaded his suburban, Tyler played his Nintendo DS and I logged onto the computer to check my email. My life hasn't been the same since.

I received an email from Corinne stating that her husband, Drew, had been killed in an auto accident at approximately 5:45pm on Good Friday. I had to read the email over and over to comprehend what it said. I just couldn't believe it. As Rob passed by me, he stopped, looked at me funny and asked what was wrong. I told him about the email, but nothing more.
Many thoughts ran through my mind over the next few days. I wondered, "Why Drew?" Corinne had the dream - she found the love of her life and was living the perfect picture that Hollywood portrays so well but seems to elude the rest of us.
I began to really think about things, to analyze what I was doing and why. Did I really have what I wanted or was I just settling? Was there something more out there for me? Was there something else I was supposed to be doing with my life? I began thinking of all my old friends, wondering what they were up to and how I had wound up where I was. And thus, my awakening began.
