  DAVE P. FISHER

I write westerns, not Hollywood westerns, but historically accurate westerns. I stay away from the ‘formula’ as much as possible winding a thread of realism through every story. My frontier spirit ranges back to my French Canadian ancestry of Voyageurs, trappers, explorers, and mountain men. My maternal grandparents moved from Quebec into the Big Fork country of the Minnesota wilderness and lived among the Chippewa.

My father grew up alongside the Santee Sioux and spent much of his childhood with them. I grew up on his stories of working for the livery, driving freight wagons, The Buffalo Bill show, and having the aging Cole Younger live in town and warning the boys not to do the things he had done. Buffalo robes warmed the wagon passengers and a band of outlaws once shot it out in the neighborhood saloon. From my father I learned first hand what the Old West was like.

My own life is an extension of this heritage and the pattern for the characters in my stories. From my youth I punched cattle, worked as a horse packer, wrangler, bronc buster, and hunting guide. I’ve trapped beaver, shoed horses, and rode saddle broncs in the rodeo. My experiences took me throughout Alaska, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, and Nevada. I’ve ridden the same country that has seen the passing of history. I camped where mountain men camped and Indian Nations battled. I’ve crossed the trails of the Pony Express, and wagons bound for Oregon; walked the streets and floors of the old cow towns where gunfighters shot it out and the famous and infamous once stood. I've studied the same mountains and drank from the same streams. The old hands I rode with taught me even more about the Old West. All of my stories, many set in these same areas, reflect all of this.

I am able to put that 'been there' feel to my stories because I have been there. The characters in my stories will often be found telling a story or involved in a situation that actually happened to me. Many of my cowboy experiences are also related in several collections of Cowboy Poetry, some of which have been the basis for short stories.

To complement this first hand experience I am continuously researching the 19th Century
West, from the beaver trappers up to the age of the cattle barons. I am determined to have every event, place, and item in each story authentic and accurate. The reader deserves a well written believable story. This attention to detail is evident in everything I write. You will rarely read a western with more insider touches than one of these.

I also write nonfiction outdoor articles. Since the fall of 2002 I have written several feature articles which have been published in Fur-Fish-Game Magazine.

Book"It was the tough old widow, Abby Chaney, who found Devon McCloud bushwhacked and left for dead on her Double A ranch. The old woman and her daughter had been fighting a losing battle against cattle baron Charles Sampson and timber man Egert Taylor who both wanted their land. On top of that, the Parker clan was cleaning out their cattle. Odds for the Chaneys were considered slim to nothing. It was supposed to be an easy takeover, but the big men never counted on Devon McCloud buckling on his gun and stepping right in the middle of their plans. Sampson and Taylor had no intention of giving up, and Devon McCloud had never in his life backed down. War was about to break out in the Strawberry Mountains. The Chaneys' odds had greatly improved, but were they good enough to win?"

Editor Review.
Devon McCloud didn't go looking for trouble, but it came to him, he didn't back down. Drygulched by rustler's he's found by Abby Chaney, a widow losing cattle. Once Devon's wounds healed, he goes hunting. Trying to help Abby and her daughter, Katy, they begin a long battle against a cattle baron on one side and a timber magnate on the other. They didn't expect Devon McCloud to make it his fight as well. His Scotsman's blood up, Devon pits his strength and determination against incredible odds. And with a little help from his friends, he just might win.

The Strawberry Mountain War is written by a man who knows the west and what being a cowboy is all about. Mr. Fisher has worked on ranches in several states. He's been a horse packer, guide, horse breaker, horseshoer, and saddle bronc rider.

The Strawberry Mountain War is a can't put down read and the author's knowledge of the cowboy life shines through.
