  DONALD BECK

I am a published author and college professor looking to make writing my career. I have written five complete books to date and have plans to write many more. My books are fiction and in the realm of mystery/thriller in nature with a bit of historical fact thrown in to make the stories more interesting. Currently I teach: creative writing, history, business and other subjects on the college level for over 14 years. My number one love has always been writing but I never had the courage to try to get anything published. That all changed when I submitted some of my poetry to a contest and won. My poems are featured in numerous compilations in the US and Europe. Midnight Stories was my first novel published in 2004. My second and third books are published and I am actively seeking a publisher for my fourth and fifth books. I hold two undergraduate degrees in Management and Medicine. I am a musician, singer, and songwriter with over 40 years of music experience winning six awards for my songs statewide. In college, I did some acting work in plays. I must always be doing something creative and writing affords me the opportunity to unleash my creativity. I am including two excerpts from both of my books. The first is from Midnight Stories a collection of seven mystery/thriller stories and the second is from The Dark Side of the Abyss a psychological thriller. My email address is: BeckTeachr@AOL.com for those interested.

The boat made its way slowly up river cutting through the murky mosquito infested water. Smoke poured from its single smokestack choking the passenger’s lungs. Its engines straining and backfiring frequently as the rusted hulk meandered up the river. Everything on the ship smelled of smoke. The cabins, the deck, their clothes, and the air they breathed gave no relief from the choking fumes.
Down below in the hold the chest was firmly tied down. Every hour Quinn went to check on it. The only company it had were the abundance of rats that infested the hold. Quinn had to kick a few out of his way as he descended the steep rusted stairs. One particularly large rat tried to take a bite out of Quinn’s leg almost tearing through his trousers. Quinn smashed his jungle boot down hard on the rat’s head crushing it. This action caused the other rats to get the message as they quickly got out of his way. He noticed that the chest was emitting a strange glow. The same glow coming from the tablet that night in his house before the regents were killed. Quinn touched it and had to move his hand away quickly! It was giving off a lot of heat. Some of the rats were converging on the stairs. They were beginning to lick up the blood from the dead rat when suddenly they began to convulse and die. Quinn noticed that the glow from the chest had lit up the entire hold. All of the rats were dying. Quickly he ran up the stairs slamming the iron door behind him.
“We were having lunch with President Valdez the other day and he told us how disappointed he was with you, General Castrillon,” Walter said eyeing the mark.
“I don’t know what you mean!” Castrillon stated unaware of what Walter was talking about and getting angry.
Walter rose to his feet as did David a blank emotionless expression on his face.
“You see President Valdez is a personal friend of Mr. Henessey and he asked us to do him a favor of which we could not refuse because that would be perceived as impolite and might cause repercussions,” Walter calmly stated.
“What did he ask you to do?” Castrillon asked fear rising in his body and mind.
“Kill you, General Castrillon!” Walter emphatically said turning to David then saying the word “Poppy”.
David saw the SS soldier the Death’s Head emblem clearly on his hat and uniform reached in his pocket for the pistol pointed it at the Nazi and pulled the trigger. The bullet slammed into Castrillon’s stomach. He let out a cry of pain holding his hand over the wound moving toward David who fired again placing the bullet square into the temple. Castrillon fell to the floor dead. David quietly returned the pistol to his pocket then calmly sat down.
In a few seconds President Valdez entered the room.
“Remove this piece of shit from my sight!” he ordered as two soldiers carried Castrillon’s body away. Next he turned to Walter and David. “Please, tell your employer Mr. Henessey how grateful I am for this small service,” the President said quickly exiting the room.
Walter turned to David. “You did well,” he said.
