  ALICE C. BATEMAN

Writer PhotoCanadian writer Alice C. Bateman was born and raised in the province of Ontario but has travelled extensively in Canada and settled in Calgary, Alberta, among the Rocky Mountains. If you think you recognize Alice's face or name, you probably do, after a decade of public life as one of Toronto's licensed craft vendors, with attendant TV and newspaper publicity. Toronto's City TV may very well be still playing filler clips with Alice, 'live from the corner of Yonge and Gould.' When the inspiration strikes, Alice still designs and hand makes fashion jewelry - but her first love, her passion, is writing.

And for those of you calculating how old this picture must be because you know Alice from way back when, Don Tietz, the subject of One American Dreamer took it the first day she met Don, on his brother Gene's birthday on 04/04/04, April 4th 2004. After fifty or so hours on a Greyhound. There, Pam, the photo is updated. Þ

Ask about her favorite job ever, and Alice would say it was when she worked with The Nylons, the highly successful Canadian A Capella group, in their management office and out accompanying the group to performances. A job that might not have left Alice enough time to get her first three books written and published, she loved her work and 'the guys' so much. Maybe it's a good thing life moved in another direction.

Know her name from answering your telephone? Alice worked with the national market research company, The Angus Reid Group for a few years, and placed thousands of telephone calls before becoming a Supervisor in the phone room.

All of these activities and more went into creating the well of content Alice draws from on a daily basis to create her stockpile of writings. From poetry and song lyrics to opinion columns, from short stories to novels, Alice C. Bateman is a prolific and accomplished writer who is already enjoyed around the globe through the magic of the Internet.

Pick up her books, you'll be glad you did.

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
  • My third book, a Biographical Novel based on the life and times of Iowa man Donald R. Tietz, IS PUBLISHED as of October 10th 2005. I'll put a link to the 'Progress' Page I made for Dreamer, but you'll have to copy and paste from here:

    http://www.angelfire.com/realm3/alice_c_bateman/DreamersProgress.html

"One American Dreamer" reflects the Twentieth Century in a sensitive and moving way, entwined with the thoughts and feelings, challenges and accomplishments of Don Tietz.

An inspiring, educational and rewarding experience, look for One American Dreamer at Author House or from your own favorite bookseller.

This work, I believe, is my biggest Accomplishment to date. Certainly the most intense experience of my creative life, linking with another person's life and memories. I'm sure it will be quite interesting when Don and I start talking about this work!

You can find One American Dreamer at any major online bookseller, ask for it at your local bookstore, order it directly from Author House at the link in 'My Favorite Links' or look for it on EBay soon. It's a beautiful book, and would make a lovely Christmas Gift for any readers in your circle, from children to grandparents.

I've just written a review for my friend and music producer Randall Cousins, which prompted me to use this 'Accomplishments' segment to talk about the Accomplishments of some of the friends I've been fortunate enough to make along the way. Mostly in Music and Writing, as these are my two main interests. I'll share the review I just wrote for Randall's recent CD, and then give you a website to go with it:

Digital space-jazz funky wonky sound is generally not my first choice in music, but ever since Murder on the Ice Train arrived, it's become the most popular CD in the house. I don't know if Randall Cousins intended that this music should play a movie called 'Murder on the Ice Train' in my head as I'm listening, but that's exactly what it does. And it's not only me who likes this so much, my nine year old son and my early-twenties nephew both love this CD. Randall is touching on something inside us with this music, something primal and basic, but lost in space. How on earth does he do this? Listen for yourself, I guess, see if you feel the same.

"Audio Radiance for the Radio Audience" is Randall's onsite slogan, and it fits. (You'll have to copy and paste links in this section.)

    http://www.rotonoto.com/

From here, you can link to places where you can listen to and buy Randall's music - I recommend it in every musical genre Randall produces.

It wouldn't be right to talk about my music friends and leave out my sweet, beautifully voiced friend from right here in Calgary, Jenny Allen. Jenny's currently working with a band called The Fates, who you can visit by copy and pasting this link into your browser:

    www.thefates.ca

Thanks for all the years of music and friendship, Jenny!

  • Some others I like to consider dear friends in the music business are The Nylons, Arnold and Claude are the only two left of the members I worked with. I was with them when Marc Connors very sadly died of AIDS, and was privileged to be on the roof when The Nylons recorded the video of Busy Tonight, Marc's last video. Micah Barnes and then Billy Newton Davis were working with Arnold & Claude most of the time I was working with The Nylons.

As I'm writing this, I can hear one concert hall or another, one stage in a grand hotel or another, saying "Ladies and Gentlemen, THE NYLONS!" Makes me grin a mile wide to remember those days, standing offstage singing at the top of my lungs where no one but 'the guys' could see me. Or, if I had to just sit in the audience, I'd get dressed all glittery so they could see me easily from the stage.

A short period of my life, but I believe I made lifelong friends in The Nylons, and I'm dying to see them again now that I'm thinking about them so deeply.

This is certainly one of my own Accomplishments, making friends like these, and they are certainly very accomplished themselves.

    Ladies and Gentlemen, THE NYLONS:

I miss you guys, hope we'll be in the same place soon!

  • I'm pleased and proud to call Colonel Buster Doss of Stardust Records of Nashville a friend who never fails to make me smile. Colonel Buster does so much good for so many hugely talented musicians, God must surely be saving a special place in Heaven for Colonel Buster Doss. None too soon though I hope!

Here's a link to copy and paste for Stardust Records:

    http://www.stardustcountrymusic.com/

Colonel Buster Doss is an amazing man!

And through Colonel Buster and the Stardust Message Board, I met Jack Blanchard and his wife Misty Morgan, wonderful musicians who have been performing original music for 35 years now.

Here is a link to Jack and Misty's website, where you'll find out how to listen to and buy their music:

    http://www.jackandmisty.com/

I'm so proud and privileged to have all these wonderfully talented people in my life, and thank God for them every day.

  • And of course I have to share the Accomplishments of my Writer friends! First, there's a private little Forum called Wondersmith West where you can feel free to say hello to me and some of 'my' writers. Once again, you have to copy and paste these links into your browser.

    http://www.network54.com/Forum/264386

Other friends have books published, like Stu Engle, who was the originator and owner of The Writer's Voice, years ago on Geocities. Stu encouraged me to put my work online in public, and without Stu's push, I would never have gotten as far as I have. His new book is available here:

    http://www.authorhouse.com/BookStore/ItemDetail~bookid~26956.aspx

My friend Marcia McMahon is an Artist and Writer who has published a beautiful book about afterlife conversations with Princess Diana. Whether you believe in this kind of thing or not, Marcia does, and Princess Diana is a woman I much admire, alive or dead. Here's a link to Marcia's Book:

    http://www.angelfire.com/mb2/diana_speaks/about_marcia.html

Gregory Rummo, a popular Opinion Columnist, published his first book called The View From the Grass Roots, a compilation of his columns.

Here is a link to Greg's book:

    http://www.geocities.com/gregoryjrummo/grassroots.htm

Julie Pisacane, one of 'my' writers and a good friend, has published a book this past year, an inspirational work entitled The One I Turn To, which can be found by putting Julie's name into the bookstore search engine at:

    http://www.publishamerica.com

My friend Robert Murray has published a book called The Stars Still Shine and also produces an emagazine. Robert and his son James can be found through copy and pasting this link in your browser:

    http://www.thestarsstillshine.com/zine.html

And not to forget that Sharon Stewart included a recipe of mine in the Tennessee Waltzing in the Kitchen Cookbook, produced in memory of Redd Stewart. Redd was a Country Music singer with a velvet crooning voice, and we are trying to have Redd included in the Country Music Hall of Fame, where he belongs. When you copy and paste the cookbook link into your browser, please take time to sign the Guest Book, and add your vote to get Redd Stewart into the Hall of Fame.

    http://www.reddstewart.com/cookbook.html

My friend Mary Lou Mulloy, known as Sewlovely on the Internet, is not a writer herself, but takes time to present other people's work on beautifully illustrated pages. You can copy and paste this link into your browser to see an example:

    http://www.sewlovely.org/Somedays_Flowers.htm

Thanks Mary Lou, for all the beautiful pages you've made with my own poetry!

Once again, I am proud and pleased to number these talented people among my friends. There are many more people in my life I should be talking about too, but space here is limited. Sorry to have left anyone out, but know that I feel that making good friends is one of the biggest Accomplishments in this life - we all need the love and support of good friends.

MY NEWS:

ONE AMERICAN DREAMER is published! Author House released my new book on October 10th 2005, available for order now from the publisher. There is a substantial savings off the cover price if you order direct from the publisher, especially for the hardcover version. I've put the link directly to the book below, under 'my favorite links.'

And for those looking in the Book Stores for my work, my friend Pam Pal has just confirmed that Chapters in Canada has finally put my books into their system, available on a twenty-four hour order. Maybe if they get enough orders, they'll put them on the shelves! Couldn't Canada use another writer?

Feel free to ask for my work by name at any local bookstore, no matter where you are in the world, I'm carried through the regular distributor, Ingram.

In non-writing related news, I've suddenly gotten involved in acting, have already spent four days as a Saloon Girl in a Robert Duvall TV Mini-Series called Daughters of Joy. You can copy and paste this link into your browser to see some pictures from the location:

http://www.members.shaw.ca/alicecbateman/PhotosDaughtersofJoy.html

I'm very excited about doing this kind of work, it was tremendous fun, and I must have done a good job because I was front and center in-camera in 95% of the scenes I was in. We'll all be able to watch this on TV next summer.

In other website news, I've built a new Illustrated Website, several pages with my own work, and incorporating pretty pages Mary Lou Mulloy has made for me. Thanks for the spur to get Wondersmith West up and running, Jenn and Mary Lou!

Here's a copy and paste link to Wondersmith West:

http://www.angelfire.com/realm3/alice_c_bateman/

I have nothing managerial to do with The Writer's Voice anymore, in case anyone is wondering, and I'd imagine any comments that are left about me and my work there are simply deleted by the webmaster. We had vast differences of editorial direction suddenly, and since he paid the website fees, I had to withdraw.

I apologize to all of the over 700 writers whose work I edited and placed on the site by hand for disappearing. It became impossible to continue. I'm still proud of the work I did to build The Writer's Voice, and regret to this day that I was forced by differing policy combined with an insignificant amount of money to remove myself.

BOOKS PUBLISHED:

BookOne American Dreamer is a Biographical Novel based on the life and times of well-known Iowa man Donald R. Teitz. This book, Alice C. Bateman's third, entwines many of the events and high profile, power people in 20th Century show business and politics - in an easily readable, storyteller fashion that you won't want to put down.

'Dreamer' spans from 1936 post-Depression America to the turn of the year 2000, showcasing the remarkable and often exciting life of Don Tietz, and also showing us the times of the last century we may have forgotten, or never knew.

History is woven through this real life story, in a manner that doesn't make it feel like 'lessons.' Invaluable life lessons are also liberally sprinkled throughout this combined effort from Donald R. Tietz and Alice C. Bateman - their brainchild could well be your new favorite book.

You can find 'Dreamer' at all major online booksellers, ask at your local bookstore, or order directly from the publisher at the link above.

Pick up One American Dreamer! You'll find yourself being glad you did, for reasons of your own.
